What a red banana is like
Red bananas have a reddish-purple peel, thicker than the Canary bananas you see everywhere on the island. Inside, the flesh is cream-coloured or slightly pink, sweet and soft, with a fruity note. They are shorter and plumper than an ordinary banana.
Good to know
How to tell when it is ripe
A red banana is ready when the peel darkens a little and gives slightly when you press it, like a ripe avocado. If yours is still firm, leave it at room temperature for a couple of days.
What a blue banana is like
Blue bananas stand out for their bluish, silvery peel before they ripen, turning pale yellow when ready. The flesh is soft and creamy, lovely on its own or in smoothies.
How to eat them
Both are eaten raw, just like any banana: on their own, in fruit salad, with yoghurt or blended into a smoothie. They make a fun thing to try while you are on holiday in Tenerife.
