Good to know

Red and blue bananas

These are the two that surprise visitors most. The red banana has a purple-red peel and sweeter, creamier flesh than an ordinary banana. The blue banana stands out for its bluish peel and soft texture. Read our guide to red and blue bananas.

Dragon fruit, coconut and pomegranate

Dragon fruit is best chilled: cut it in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Coconuts can be opened at your apartment to drink the water and eat the flesh. Pomegranates, when in season, are great in salads or eaten with a spoon.

Cooking ingredients: plantain and ají

Plantain is not eaten raw: fry it, roast it or boil it, as in tostones or patacones. Sweet and hot ají peppers flavour Latin American stews and sofritos. If you are self-catering in Tenerife, they are easy wins for a holiday dinner.
