# Where to buy exotic fruit in Tenerife

At Frutería la Gomera, stalls 14/15 in the Mercado de África in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, we stock exotic fruit that is hard to find in the island's supermarkets.

## Exotic fruit we usually have

**Red banana**, **blue banana** and **coconut** are usually available. On many days we also have **pitahaya** (dragon fruit), **pomegranate**, **sweet and hot ají peppers** and **plantain**. The selection changes with what arrives at the market, so if you are after something specific, message us on WhatsApp before you come.

## Red and blue bananas

These are the two that surprise visitors most. The red banana has a purple-red peel and sweeter, creamier flesh than an ordinary banana. The blue banana stands out for its bluish peel and soft texture. [Read our guide to red and blue bananas](https://fruterialagomera.com/en/red-banana-tenerife/).

## Dragon fruit, coconut and pomegranate

Dragon fruit is best chilled: cut it in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Coconuts can be opened at your apartment to drink the water and eat the flesh. Pomegranates, when in season, are great in salads or eaten with a spoon.

## Cooking ingredients: plantain and ají

Plantain is not eaten raw: fry it, roast it or boil it, as in tostones or patacones. Sweet and hot ají peppers flavour Latin American stews and sofritos. If you are self-catering in Tenerife, they are easy wins for a holiday dinner.

## Why the Mercado de África

The Mercado Nuestra Señora de África, also known as La Recova, is the main food market in central Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is covered, has free parking for customers, and is worth a visit in its own right. [Here is how to find our stall](https://fruterialagomera.com/en/fruit-shop-mercado-de-africa/).
