# Dragon fruit in Tenerife: where to buy it

Dragon fruit, called pitahaya in Spanish, is one of the most eye-catching fruits at our stall. At Frutería la Gomera in the Mercado de África we have it on many days.

## What dragon fruit is

It is the fruit of a climbing cactus. Outside it has a bright pink or yellow skin with green scales; inside, white or red flesh full of tiny edible black seeds. The taste is mild, fresh and lightly sweet.

## How to choose one

Look for bright, even colour without too many dark patches, and fruit that gives slightly when pressed gently. If it is very firm, leave it a day or two at room temperature.

## How to eat it

It is best chilled. Cut it in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon, or peel and dice it for fruit salad, a yoghurt bowl or a smoothie. The skin is not eaten.

## Availability

Dragon fruit is not in every day: it depends on what arrives at the market. If you are coming specially, message us on WhatsApp first. [See our other exotic fruit](https://fruterialagomera.com/en/exotic-fruit-tenerife/).

## Where we are
